Marvin Monroe's Obituary
Marvin Lewis Monroe was born March 26, 1949 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Clifton Unbanks and Louise (Stovall) Monroe. Marvin graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1968. Marvin had a love for sports during his academic years and was later inducted into the East High School Athletic Hall of Fame in May of 2016. Marvin was drafted into The United States Army and served in the Vietnam War from September 1969 to June 1970, honorably discharging in March of 1972.
Marvin married the love of his life, Willie Marie Epps, on January 1, 1992 in Waterloo. Of this union they had one daughter, Gladys Olivia.
Marvin passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at UnityPoint Health, Waterloo of natural causes.
Marvin had many jobs in his lifetime. Marvin retired from Tyson Foods in Waterloo in 2011 after 18 years of service. During his free time Marvin enjoyed fishing every summer, going to church, cooking at home or at church, grilling, doing yardwork, and spending time with his family. Marvin loved to laugh and enjoyed doing whatever he could to help the next person, if he was able. Marvin was quiet but he loved people.
Marvin leaves behind his beloved daughter, Gladys Olivia of Waterloo; his two sisters who he adored, Ginger (Monroe) Shirley and Charlotte “Chuckie” Monroe of Freeport, Illinois; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents; two sisters, Alcenia Monroe and LaVonna (Monroe) Anderson; two brothers, James and Glen Monroe; and a brother-in-law, Hartsel C. Shirley, Jr.
Memorials may be directed to the family at 1750 Newell Street, Waterloo.
Full military rites will be performed by American Legion Post #138 and VFW Post #1623. (U.S. Army veteran)
