Sam Thomas' Obituary
Sam Chester Thomas was called to Glory on March 28, 2025, in Waterloo, Iowa, surrounded by the love of his family. He lived a full, vibrant, exciting life that brought joy to many.
Sam was born June 26, 1945 in Durant, Mississippi to Earlie and Maggie Thomas (Downer). Sam entered into this world abounding with strong will and energy which followed him throughout his entire lifetime. He moved from Mississippi to Waterloo as a teenager and after his arrival, Waterloo was never the same. He worked and retired from John Deere Tractor Works after 32 years; however, refusing to retire from life, he continued to be employed with numerous part-time positions at various locations.
Sam Thomas supported family and friends, loved to travel, loved his family. Sam was an active member at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board and as a member of the Male Chorus. He was always visiting hospitals and nursing homes in hopes to raising spirits and bringing joy to the sick and shut-in with laughter. He loved good food, fine clothes, and fast cars. He never lost a friend and never met a stranger. He loved life.
Sam is survived by his wife of 22 years, Linda Thomas; his five children: Vangela Thompson (Ronnie), Carleita Kenner (Ira), Latrina James, Sam Thomas, Jr., and Terrance Thomas; eight grandchildren, Chalonda Ivory (Tarron), LaQuay Bailey, Taelon Smith, Brittney Thomas, Jayden Thomas, Xavier James, Sharief Thomas, and Gabriel Cutchlow; two great-grandchildren, Mia and Sailas; three stepsons, Glen Moore, Tavis Moore, and Kentrell Moore; four sisters, Maggie Elliott (Joel), Rose Perkins (Rev. William), Ada Osborne (Garland), and Caroline Loveless; sister-in-law, Mother Ella Thomas; two special friends, Ike Buchanan and Neal Dean; and including many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earlie and Maggie Thomas (Downer); sisters, Bertha Smith, Mary Cambell, Lavern Sampson, and Georgianna Thomas; and brothers, Erlie Thomas, Jr., Rev. Thad Thomas, Rev. Melton Thomas, and LC Thomas.
Rest in Peace, Beloved Sam. You fought a good fight and know that your love will remain with us forever.
