Reverend George Moore Jr.'s Obituary
Rev. George Moore, Jr., 100, died on Friday, September 5, 2025 in his home. He was born April 11, 1925 in Americus, Georgia to George Moore, Sr. and Ora (Collins) Moore.
He lived in Americus and helped with farming until he went to Wisconsin. There he worked at the University of Wisconsin Hospital as a male nurse aide until he was promoted to lab technician with the help and teaching of his supervisor. He worked for 25 years. He also worked as Chaplain at the Men’s Correctional Center in Anamosa, Iowa.
He was ordained as a minister in 1941. He founded Grace Mission Church in Madison, Wisconsin. He pastored seven churches during his pastoral charge: St. Paul AME Church, Madison, Wisconsin (as interim; 11 months); Wayman AME Church, Delavan, Wisconsin (3 years); Mother St. James AME Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota (3 years); Bethel AME Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa (6 years); Payne Memorial AME Church (8 years); Trinity AME Church, Waukegan, Illinois (8 years); and Allen Chapel AME Church, Rockford, Illinois (11 years). He retired in 2004 froms pastoring but continued to serve and preach in the district. He was very capable of helping churches he pastored to get financially stable and increase congregations.
One of his quotes: “I believe in honoring God in the sanctuary. My position for over 50 years has encompassed preaching, teaching, witnessing, singing, praying, and evangelizing with special emphasis on youth and education.”
One of his hobbies was he liked to fish.
We celebrated his 100th birthday on April 12, 2025 at Payne AME Church, Waterloo, Iowa. It was a joyous occasion with more than 110 attending!
His desire was to have his last membership at the church where he was ordained, St. Paul AME in Madison, Wisconsin (Rev. Gregory Armstrong, Pastor).
He’s had other marriages and was married to Naomi Patterson Sisk on March 10, 2022; she was his major caregiver during his issues. We will miss hearing all the old stories of the past that he enjoyed telling – over and over and . . .
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, his brothers, O.G. Moore, James Moore, Warren G. Moore, and Albert Moore and his sisters, Ora Bell Smith, Julia Mae Edge, and Mamie Mosley; his sons, Eddie and Curtis; and his daughter, Helen Mercer.
