Jimmie Dell (Billy Bird) Hunter's Obituary
Jimmie Dell Hunter, affectionately known as “Billy Bird,” was born January 25, 1952 to Everleana (Peterson) Hunter and John Hunter in Greenwood, Mississippi. Jimmie departed this life September 22, 2025 surrounded by his loving wife, Toyia.
Bird moved to Waterloo, Iowa at an early age. Soon after he was united in marriage to Joyce Epps. They were later divorced but to this union one son, Jimmie Dell Hunter Jr., was born. Bird also had two additional sons, Cortez Banks and Dartavious Banks.
After a five-year courtship Bird united with Toyia “Baby” Ambrose. No children were born to this union but Bird gained three bonus children, Devonte and Derrick Ambrose Jr. and Jatera Wiley.
Bird united with the Shilliam Avenue COGIC. His attendance was not frequent but he was a friend of God and a friend to the Pastor, Elder Marshall Stevenson.
Soon after moving to Iowa Bird became employed by John Deere where he worked for 16 years. Following John Deere, he worked in varied places until his health began to fail.
Bird loved to fish. Fishing was not only his escape but his opportunity to bond with his grands, family, and friends. When not fishing he was at home cooking up something. He was a great chef and was always good for a good ole down home meal.
Bird was loved by many. He was the fourth of nine children and everyone looked to “Uncle Bird” for whatever they needed. He was always there willing to help wherever he could.
Bird will be remembered by that infectious smile. The smile that was genuine and made you smile back even if you didn’t want to.
Bird is survived by his wife; three sons, Jimmie (Hilary) of Marion, Iowa and Cortez and Dartavious Banks of Waterloo; one stepson, Devonte (Simone) Ambrose of Georgia; one stepdaughter, Jatera Wiley of Plano, Texas; four sisters, Johnnie Mae Shaw of Georgia, Lucille Markham of Gary, Indiana, and Louise (Vince) Harris and Everleana Hunter of Greenwood; two brothers, Earl D. of Waterloo and Walter of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Elijah, Alayha, Zoey, and Christopher (C3) Wright; a special sister-in-love, Sheryl (his namesake and birthday twin); and also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepson, Derrick Ambrose Jr.; his brothers, Willie James and John Hunter; and his favorite pet, Marley.
Memorials may be directed to the family at 905 Bishop Avenue, Waterloo, Iowa 50707.
